Display Introduction

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month logoMay is here, and with it, the warmer days of spring are beginning to take hold. At the Library, we're celebrating and honoring Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month -- a time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of people with roots across the entire Asian continent and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was first established as a week-long observance in 1978, when President Jimmy Carter signed it into public law. The first celebration took place in May 1979, and it wasn't until 1990 that the observance was expanded to a full month. In 1992, it was officially designated as a month-long celebration.

May was chosen to commemorate two key events: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in May 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 -- a project largely built by Chinese laborers.

We invite you to explore the stories, voices, and contributions of the AAPI community by checking out our virtual and physical displays and other library resources.
